Kimberly Hughes, sponsor of the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act, was a featured speaker at a Women’s History Month networking event held on March 15 at the ballroom of Riverbed Golf Course. Hughes, a military gold star spouse and published author, addressed leaders at U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys during the event, which focused on the theme of “inspire and influence” and was open to U.S. Forces Korea professionals.
As the wife of Army Maj. Gary Hughes, who passed away in 2018, Kimberly shared her journey and motivations behind championing the PACT Act in 2022, which ensures healthcare for veterans who served in combat zones. The PACT Act correlates 13 types of cancers, asthma, and other illnesses to toxin exposure overseas. Despite temporarily visiting Korea, Kimberly agreed to participate in the event.
“In memory of my husband, I made a vow to continue his fight against cancer. He never gave up, and neither will I,” she remarked.
Kimberly aimed to inspire others with her resilience. “I use my story to advocate for the 3.5 million individuals still battling illness, and I’ll keep fighting for them,” she affirmed.
The event, organized by Corinne Keyes, Chief for the Special U.S. Liaison Advisor Korea, drew over 50 participants. Six guest speakers from diverse professions, including Heather Ray, Monee Luckey, Dr. Helen Bailey, Col. Heather Levy, and Command Sgt. Maj. Nickea Harris, shared their experiences.
This year, the event welcomed male participants, mixing them with women to foster meaningful exchanges. Captain Michael Caulfield, representing the 303rd Intelligence Squadron, highlighted the impact of strong female role models in his life.
The event featured icebreaker activities, table networking sessions, speaker presentations, and a panel discussion. Participants engaged in discussions on achieving work-life balance, leadership, mentorship, and building connections.
Overall, the event provided a platform for sharing inspiring stories and promoting professional growth and empowerment among attendees.
