On November 14, at 2:00 p.m., Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee, a global women’s advocate and peace activist from Liberia, will make a return visit to Seton Hall to speak at the World Leaders Forum. The event, which is being hosted by the School of Diplomacy and International Relations, will start at 2 p.m. in Bethany Hall on the South Orange campus.

The 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate, Madam Gbowee, is most recognized for spearheading a nonviolent movement that united Muslim and Christian women and was crucial in bringing an end to the bloody, fourteen-year civil war in Liberia in 2003. The election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female head of state in Africa, was made possible by this historic accomplishment in Liberia. It also signaled the beginning of a new wave of women becoming vital and exceptionally successful global brokers of long-term peace and security.

Madam Gbowee joined the School of Diplomacy’s Board of Advisors in 2022, but she has long been a friend of the institution. In addition to working with the school’s board of advisors and her own foundation to arrange scholarships for African students to pursue degrees from the institution, she is currently a visiting scholar. Since its founding by Madam Gbowee, the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa-USA has welcomed interns from the School of Diplomacy almost every semester. The foundation offers women, girls, and young people opportunities for leadership development and education.
